Workshop FAQ
What is included?
What does it cost?
The workshop cost is $130.00.
How do I pay for the workshop?
Book and pay by credit card at Trybooking.com
For alternative payment methods, please contact me.
What else do I need to know?
What should I wear?
You will get dusty, so wear old clothes or protective smock/apron and sturdy, closed toe shoes.
Is there any pre-reading/preparation you would recommend?
It is not necessary to have a design in mind when you come to the workshop. In fact, when learning, it can be better to simply start carving the stone and see what develops. The focus is on learning how to use the tools and how the stone behaves when you are carving it.
If you would like some inspiration before the workshop, use Google or Pinterest to search for images of “stone sculpture” or “abstract stone sculpture”. Your local library should have a few books on sculpture and I will bring some to the workshop.
If you do have a design in mind, consider the size of the blocks we will be using (10 x 14 x 66cm or 10 x 29 x 33cm) and also that limestone is quite coarse, so it is difficult to carve very detailed features.

- I will explain how to use the tools to work the limestone and some of the elements of sculpture design and by the end of the day you will have your own sculpture to take home!
- You will also get information on where to source limestone and tools so you can continue carving at home.

What else do I need to know?
- Please note that sculpting stone is quite physical (handling the stone and using tools like chisels and rasps to carve it), so the workshop may not be suitable if you have dexterity issues.
- Normally you will be standing at a workbench for most of the workshop to carve the stone. It is possible to sculpt from a seated position but this may limit your access to the work. If you have any concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.
- Enrolments will close on the Friday before the workshop, or earlier if course places are filled.
- A place will not be confirmed until payment is made.
- If there are insufficient numbers for a workshop it may be cancelled or postponed. In this case, you will be notified and given a full refund.
- Refunds will be issued for cancelling workshop participation if you give at least 7 days notice prior to the workshop date.
- This workshop is for adults, children's workshops t.b.a.
- Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled workshop time.

We had a great day of sculpting at the Ashburton Scout Hall. The open fire was appreciated because of the cold morning.
